A lot of autistic people have special interests and hyperfixations! A special interest, in terms of autism, is when a person has a highly focused interest in a specific thing. These interests can range from trains, gardening and animals, to TV shows and even music! A special interest can be just about anything. It’s a very common trait of autism, and as an autistic person I also engage with my special interests. Today I wanted to share what my special interests look like - autistic people are usually very knowledgeable on their interests!
My main special interest is Studio Ghibli. Studio Ghibli is a Japanese film studio which has produced many popular animations, such as Spirited Away, My Neighbour Totoro, Ponyo and more.
Another one of my special interests are graveyards and cemeteries. I’m quite knowledgeable on them and find the atmosphere very relaxing.
One of my newest special interests are Sylvanian Families! Sylvanian Families (known as Calico Critters in the USA) are small, cute animal toys which can be collectible.
Many autistic people love talking about their special interest and sharing information. Every special interest is different - don’t be afraid to ask your autistic friends what they’re interested in! You might just learn something new.
