At record levels, it continues to destroy lives and cause frustration and chaos in many communities.<\/p>\n

After her childhood friend, Jodie Chesney, was tragically ambushed and stabbed to death in March 2019, Madi Mai was inspired to write her song Change<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The 17-year-old singer\/songwriter (15 at the time) said she felt deeply about what had happened and was concerned about the growing issue of knife crime in her area. \u201cI decided to write a song about it as that\u2019s my way of expressing things and I thought it might be nice,\u201d she admitted.<\/p>\n

Change<\/em> is the first recording Madi Mai made under the guidance of Instinctive Behaviour\u2019s producer, Major. Her demo of the song caught his attention, eventually leading to her signing with the company.<\/p>\n

There are many references to Jodie throughout the song: \u201cShe could have been your cousin, your sister, your friend. So why did her life have to end?\u201d However, its focus goes beyond her story and extends to the many individuals who can relate and have suffered similarly.<\/p>\n

\u201cI shouldn\u2019t have to be scared to step outside, walk down the street and live my life.\u201d Madi expressed how saddening it is that she and many others have to be so wary at such a young age. \u201cPeople in my mum\u2019s day wouldn\u2019t have to worry like this, but we do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Producer Major emphasises that this issue needs to be recognised on a larger scale, with greater focus on younger generations. \u201cFrom the age of 10-16 the behavioural issues begin and that\u2019s when they should be targeted.\u201d<\/p>\n

He outlines the importance of forming supportive networks across communities and aiding charities to help with rehabilitation in the best way possible.<\/p>\n

Through this song, Madi Mai and Instinctive Behaviour aim to pay tribute to Jodie Chesney and raise awareness of the destructive and increasing issue of knife crime.<\/p>\n
